LAURENT-PERRIER DESIGN AWARD 2006

Ella Doran’s range of accessories with digital images of flowers, tropical fruit and urban scenes
Ella Doran has won the Laurent-Perrier Design Award 2006 at Design-Nation’s Eureka exhibition for a range of printed accessories for John Lewis, including shower curtains, gift boxes, cards and wrapping paper inspired by the everyday world. The announcement was made last week at Eureka, a project linking designers to British retailers and manufacturers and promoting talent and quality in UK design.
A former Young Designer of the Year, Ella Doran made her name through the manipulation of digital photography, adapting new technology and marrying it with innovative framing and backgrounds to give new life to a range of seemingly mundane objects. Since receiving a Prince’s Trust Grant in 1996, Ella has worked for Portmeirion and global tablemat manufacturer Jason.
The Laurent-Perrier Design Award was judged to criteria including originality of design, attractiveness and elegance, fitness of purpose and appropriateness to the market sector. The panel of judges included Peta Levi MBE (Director, Design-Nation), David Hesketh MW (Managing Director of Laurent-Perrier UK), Sue Crewe (House & Garden), Shin Azumi (Founder ‘a studio’), and Lucia van der Post (Freelance Luxury and Style writer).
Discussing the Laurent-Perrier Award, David Hesketh MW, commented “There is a huge amount of interest in design in the UK and Laurent-Perrier is delighted to strengthen its association specifically through the Eureka project - in supporting British design talent and quality products. Ella’s winning design cleverly used decorative design to transform and differentiate everyday items.”
Commenting on the award winning collection, Lucia van der Post, said, “I thought the designs were enchanting and turned ordinary, everyday situations into things that had great charm and I longed to own.” Peta Levi, Design-Nation's Director added, "it is very exciting to see the Eureka Project grow, as more and more retailers and British manufacturers become involved. This year’s winning designs will be widely accessible in John Lewis, some for as little as £2.”

Doran was presented with a cheque for £2,000, a Jeroboam of Laurent-Perrier Brut Non-Vintage Champagne, and a Laurent-Perrier engraved crystal ice bucket.
